Fuyu Persimmon: A Favorite Cottage Fruit Tree

Fall is the perfect time in warmer zones (like Zone 9a) to plant fruit trees. It gives them plenty of time to grow a strong root system before the stress of the summer heat hits. We grow a variety of fruiting trees here at the TGG cottage, but the persimmon is one of the sweetest and one of our most favorite!

We grow the Japanese variety called Fuyu (Diospyros Kaki), short for Fuyugaki. The Fuyu is smaller in size (roughly 15-20 feet) compared to the native (D. virginiana), which can reach 80 feet in height.

In the Spring, it sets buds that open to reveal highly structured green and yellow blooms. These blooms and immature fruit make a beautiful edition to floral arrangements. In the Fall, the tree has a flush of fall-foliage color, followed by bright orange, globed fruit.

These seedless persimmons are non-astringent with a honey-like flavor - and can be eaten right off the tree. They can be dried to preserve, used fresh in salads, or as a favorite baking ingredient. 

Growing + Tips:
• The tree is self-fruitful, so you only need one. And this variety is hardy down to 10 degrees.
• Growing zones are 7-10.
• As with most fruiting trees, plant in full sun with well-drawing, loamy soil. 
• On average, it needs 100-200 chill hours.
